Budapest Could Welcome Two New Free Beaches This Summer

Budapest residents and visitors may have even more opportunities to enjoy the Danube River this summer, as the possibility of opening two new free beaches is being explored. This potential expansion of riverside recreation would complement the existing Római-part beach, offering more options for open-air swimming and relaxation.

Exploring River Bathing Options

Szűts Ildikó, CEO of Budapest Spas and Thermal Baths (BGYH) Zrt., stated that the company is examining the feasibility of establishing additional river bathing locations along the Danube. This investigation is being conducted at the request of the Budapest General Assembly and includes the potential reopening of a pontoon beach that operated in 2009.

The realization of these new free beaches hinges on two critical factors: ensuring suitable water quality and meeting the necessary physical conditions for safe bathing.

Record-Breaking Year for Budapest Spas

The exploration of new river bathing options comes on the heels of a record-breaking year for Budapest’s thermal baths. In 2024, the city’s spas welcomed over 4 million visitors, resulting in a revenue increase to 26.3 billion forints. This surge in popularity has been particularly driven by foreign tourists.

Balancing Popularity and Affordability

While the Budapest spas are thriving, efforts are being made to maintain affordability for local residents. Ticket prices increased by 10% in 2023, and another 5% increase is expected this year. However, even with these adjustments, Budapest’s spas remain relatively inexpensive compared to similar establishments internationally.

A portion of the revenue generated by the spas is allocated to funding discounts for Hungarian visitors. The company estimates that these discounts may result in an annual revenue loss of 0.8-1.4 billion forints.

Improving the Visitor Experience

In addition to exploring new bathing locations, BGYH is also focused on enhancing the visitor experience at existing spas. Proposals include digitizing the Zsigmondy card, which offers discounts for Budapest residents, implementing online appointment booking, and extending opening hours to reduce wait times and increase traffic.

However, experts emphasize that these changes, while beneficial, will not address the issue of capacity limitations at the city’s most popular spas.

Maintaining Historic Spas

The three most renowned historic spas, which are primarily frequented by foreign tourists, account for two-thirds of the total revenue. While these spas are enjoying increasing popularity, efforts are also being made to cater to domestic visitors, who make up more than half of the total traffic at other facilities.

Furthermore, the revenue generated by Budapest’s spas contributes to the renovation and upkeep of these historic sites. This year, the Széchenyi Thermal Bath alone requires 1 billion forints for ceiling repairs.

Commitment to Local Residents

BGYH emphasizes that Budapest’s spas provide the most significant discounts for local residents compared to other cities. In addition to traditional pensioner patrons, younger locals between 25-35 are increasingly becoming regular visitors, taking advantage of the affordable ticket prices.

The potential opening of new free beaches along the Danube, coupled with ongoing efforts to improve the visitor experience and maintain affordability, demonstrates Budapest’s commitment to providing diverse and accessible recreational opportunities for both residents and tourists. As the city prepares for the summer season, the prospect of enjoying a refreshing swim in the Danube at a new free beach is sure to be welcomed by many.
