Winter Weather Alert: Snowfall Expected in Budapest

Hey there, Budapest residents and visitors! Heads up – we’ve got some exciting winter weather on the horizon. Let’s dive into what you need to know about the upcoming snowfall and how the city is preparing to keep everyone safe and moving.

Snowfall Forecast

Brace yourselves, because snow is expected to hit Budapest this evening! The weather forecasts are predicting a significant amount of snow in the coming hours, so it’s time to get ready for a winter wonderland.

City Preparations

The good news is that our hardworking colleagues at FKF (Budapest Public Cleaning Company) are all geared up and ready to tackle the snow. They’ve got a well-oiled plan in place to keep the city’s roads clear and safe.

Here’s a sneak peek into their strategy:

  1. Preventive Measures: The FKF Köztisztasági Divízió (Public Cleaning Division) has already been busy applying preventive salt treatments to the roads. This clever move means that when the snow starts falling, it’ll land on pre-salted surfaces, making it harder for ice to form.
  2. Priority-Based Clearing: The FKF follows a strict priority order when clearing Budapest’s roads. Here’s how it goes:
  • First up: Bridges, overpasses, highways, and main road entry points to the city
  • Next: Hilly sections of bus routes and other public transport routes
  • Then: Roads leading to hospitals, clinics, and logistic bases for residential supplies
  • Last but not least: Side roads, including those in the Buda hills

What You Can Do

We’re all in this together, so here’s how you can help:

Property Owners: If you own or manage a property, remember that it’s your responsibility to keep the sidewalk in front of your building clear of snow and ice. For apartment buildings, this task falls to the residents’ association.

Drivers:

    • Please only use vehicles that are in good condition and equipped with winter tires. This is crucial for your safety and the safety of others on the road.
    • If possible, consider using public transportation during snowy periods (usually lasting 1-2 days).
    • When driving, please be extra cautious around the snow clearing vehicles. Don’t try to overtake them – the road is always clearer behind these machines.

Everyone: Let’s all be extra careful when moving around the city. Watch your step on potentially slippery surfaces and look out for each other.

      A Team Effort

Remember, keeping Budapest safe and accessible during snowfall is a team effort. While the FKF is responsible for clearing about 30 million square meters of the city’s surfaces, they can’t do it all alone. By working together and following these guidelines, we can all contribute to keeping our beautiful city running smoothly through the winter weather.

Stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy the winter wonderland, Budapest!
