The Magic of Advent Begins in Budapest

As the winter season descends upon Budapest, the city comes alive with the enchanting spirit of Advent. The Hungarian capital transforms into a wonderland of twinkling lights, festive decorations, and heartwarming traditions. On December 1st, at 4:30 pm, the first candle on Budapest’s Advent wreath will be lit in a special ceremony at the City Hall Winter Experience Park. The Christmas light display will run from December 1st until January 6th, 2025. Over 1,100 luminous motifs will adorn key locations across the city, including the City Hall Park, Deák Square, Erzsébet Square, Váci Street, Andrássy Avenue, Oktogon, Nagymező Street, Liszt Ferenc Square, Batthyány Square, and Clark Ádám Square. An additional 2,500 motifs will light up districts throughout Budapest, along with 3,500 icicle curtains and approximately 4 kilometers of light garlands draped on buildings.

Eco-Friendly Decorations

This year, Budapest is taking a more environmentally conscious approach to its Christmas decorations. Many of the ornaments, particularly those along Andrássy Avenue, in the City Hall Park, and on Vörösmarty Square, are crafted from sustainable materials such as wood pellets and aluminum. These organic materials can be partially recycled at the end of their lifecycle, making the city’s holiday display not only visually stunning but also eco-friendly.

Unique Decorative Elements

Budapest’s Advent decorations are set to impress with their originality and grandeur. The city will showcase 72 unique, three-dimensional decorative elements called “sun flowers” at the intersections of Andrássy Avenue and Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road, in front of the Opera House, and at Oktogon. These eye-catching ornaments are considered a rarity even among Europe’s major cities, adding an extra touch of magic to Budapest’s holiday atmosphere.

Celebrating World AIDS Day

As Budapest prepares for Advent, it also observes World AIDS Day on December 1st. In solidarity with the fight against AIDS, the Municipality of Budapest will fly a flag bearing the red ribbon, the symbol of the struggle against the disease, on its building. Additionally, a poster exhibition supported by the Municipality of Budapest and the Erzsébetváros Municipality, and organized by the Retropajzs Association, will take place over the weekend at Madách Imre Square.
