Take a Bite Of Budapest’s Birthday Cake

Natalis

2023 marked the 150th anniversary of the unification of Pest, Buda, and Óbuda into the city of Budapest. To commemorate this special occasion, the city held a cake contest inviting local pastry chefs to create an official “Budapest 150 Cake.” Even though the birthday celebrations are coming to an end, you can still take a delicious bite of Budapest’s official birthday cake!

The contest rules required using ingredients from the 19th century that represent the three former cities: exotic flavors like chocolate, pomegranate and pistachio for Pest; local produce like grapes, almonds and hazelnuts for Buda; and spices like vanilla, rose and coffee for Óbuda.

The winning creation is the “Natalis” cake from the renowned Auguszt Confectionery. This decadent dessert masterfully blends the traditional Hungarian flavors of hazelnut, coffee and chocolate with modern touches like blueberry. Its classic look is reminiscent of iconic Hungarian cakes like Dobos and Esterházy cakes.

By taking a bite of the Natalis cake, you’ll be transported back in time to experience the flavors of 19th century Budapest while also enjoying contemporary flair. Truly a rebirth of flavors befitting the city’s 150th birthday!

Be sure to try a slice of this delicious official birthday cake at select confectionaries around Budapest during your visit. It’s a unique taste of the city’s past and present.
