Revitalizing Dandár Bath: Outdoor Section and Saunas Now Open!
The Reopening of the Outdoor Area of Dandár Bath with Saunas
On December 13th, Friday, it was a lucky day for Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Ltd., as the partially renovated Dandár Bath has opened its outdoor area. This reopening marks a significant milestone in the ongoing renovation project undertaken by Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Ltd. (BGYH).
The Renovation Process
In early November, BGYH organized a residents’ meeting and tour of Dandár Bath to showcase the serious issues discovered during the renovation process and provide updates on the progress of the work. At that time, Szűts Ildikó, the CEO of the company, stated that the contractor had until January 31st to complete the project. However, preparations were being made to allow the use of two outdoor pools before that date. Work began in mid-November on grouting the pools and repairing any necessary tiling. Additionally, renovations were planned for the wellness area, including the construction of a new sauna and the purchase of a new ice machine for the plunge pool. The goal was to open the outdoor area and sauna world at Dandár by December 15th or before Christmas.
The Opening
On December 11th, Dandár Bath’s Facebook page announced that they had started filling the outdoor pool with water. They mentioned that water samples would be taken as per regulations, and the opening date would depend on the test results. Just two days later, they shared a video showcasing one of their saunas.
With no issues arising from water sampling, it is now confirmed that two days ahead of schedule, Dandár’s outdoor section has opened to visitors.
Changes in Renovation Plans
Originally, renovations at Dandár Bath were meant to involve tile replacement and technological waterproofing measures. However, upon breaking ground for tiling work, structural issues in the ceiling became apparent. A structural engineering assessment determined that reinforcing the ceiling structure and installing a new ceiling panel were necessary for continued operation of the bath facility. Consequently, renovation plans had to be adjusted accordingly, leading to a revised construction schedule. To minimize disruption for guests, renovations were divided into two phases. The first phase has now been completed, allowing access to outdoor pools and saunas. The indoor renovation phase is expected to extend into early 2025 with costs escalating due to ceiling repairs from an initial estimate of 68 million HUF to approximately 100 million HUF.
Unforeseen Challenges
BGYH announced on June 14th that Dandár Bath would close for renovations. Originally slated for completion within six weeks, unexpected structural issues were discovered in this nearly century-old building during August’s inspection necessitating further investigation by opening up ceiling structures.
At November’s residents’ meeting, Haraszti Imre, technical director at BGYH explained that initial plans involved tile removal and waterproofing reconstruction but revealed that corrosion had affected concrete reinforcement upon uncovering ceiling structures. To address this issue, remaining beams will be reinforced with steel structures supporting a new reinforced concrete panel for tiling and waterproofing purposes. Demolition of partition walls will allow for modernized spatial layouts within this bathhouse constructed in 1930.
Conclusion
While facing unforeseen challenges during renovations at Dandár Bath has resulted in delays and increased costs; careful planning and phased execution ensure minimal disruptions while preserving this historic spa facility for future generations to enjoy.
