Free Dog and Bicycle Transport on MÁV Group Services within Budapest
Starting January 1, 2025, a significant change will be implemented in Budapest’s public transportation: the transport of bicycles and dogs will become free on MÁV Group services within the city.
Details of the New Regulation
Free transport is available to passengers who have:
- A valid national or Pest county pass
- A Budapest pass
- Free travel entitlement within the capital
- A monthly pass for job seekers with photo ID
Important notes
- Passengers can transport either one bicycle or one dog for free at a time
- Regular tickets must be purchased for additional bicycles or dogs
- Existing travel rules remain in effect to prevent inconvenience caused by improperly transported bicycles or dogs
Travel Beyond Budapest’s Borders
For journeys outside Budapest’s administrative boundaries, bicycle or dog tickets must still be purchased. However, since the spring tariff reform, these are available at a more favorable price of 500 HUF.
Discounts:
- Hungarian Cyclists’ Club members and START Club cardholders: Bicycle ticket costs 375 HUF
- Monthly Bicycle Country Pass: Available for 4,950 HUF (seat reservation may be required)
- Dog Country Pass: Available for 1,890 HUF, valid on almost all MÁV-Start, GYSEV, and HÉV services (only valid on VOLÁN services)
Transport Conditions and Rules
Dog transport:
- Leash and muzzle required for small and medium-sized dogs (up to 20 kg) on all trains with seat reservations
- Valid vaccination certificate (less than 1 year old) must be presented upon request
Bicycle transport:
- Bicycles must be placed in designated areas without obstructing other passengers
- Bicycle seat reservations remain mandatory on InterCity, express trains, and some international trains, even for travel within Budapest
Background and Purpose of the Change
This change is being introduced at the request of the Ministry of Construction and Transport and based on passenger feedback. The goal is to make public transportation more attractive and encourage sustainable and environmentally friendly travel modes.
This new regulation, effective from the beginning of the new year, represents a significant improvement for Budapest commuters, especially those who regularly travel with bicycles or dogs. The free transport option not only offers financial savings but also contributes to promoting public transportation and improving urban mobility.
