Budapest’s Beloved Riverside Promenade Set for Another Spectacular Season

Budapest's Beloved Riverside Promenade Set for Another Spectacular Season

A Milestone Year for the Rakpart

The pesti alsó rakpart, Budapest’s iconic riverside promenade, is gearing up for an extraordinary year in 2025. From March to October, the embankment will once again transform into the city’s vibrant “living room,” open to pedestrians, cyclists, and leisure-seekers every weekend and daily during the summer school break.

2025 marks a significant milestone for the rakpart initiative. It’s the 5th anniversary of the project that began in the summer of 2020, which has since become one of Budapest’s most popular attractions. However, this year also represents a bittersweet moment, as it may be the last time the embankment opens in its current form before major renovations begin.

Key Dates and Extended Access

  • The weekend openings commence on Saturday, March 15, and conclude on Sunday, October 26.
  • For 226 days, the pesti alsó rakpart will offer an alternative to its usual traffic-congested state.
  • The embankment will be accessible every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday between these dates.
  • A continuous summer opening is scheduled from June 21 to mid-August, coinciding with the school break.
  • An additional week-long opening is planned from September 15 to 22, celebrating Budapest’s European Mobility Week award.

A Scenic Urban Oasis

The rakpart’s popularity stems from its unparalleled location and stunning views. Visitors can enjoy panoramic vistas stretching from the verdant Gellért Hill to the Buda Castle and the iconic Chain Bridge, all while being cooled by Danube breezes on warm summer days.

Continuous Urban Innovation

Over the years, the temporary openings have provided valuable insights for urban planners and event organizers. This feedback has led to continuous improvements, including increased green spaces, enhanced services, and a more diverse range of activities.

Transformation and Evolution

The embankment has evolved significantly since its first opening post-COVID lockdowns. Notable additions include a tree-lined promenade near Margaret Bridge and flower beds replacing parking spaces near Vigadó. The area has hosted various events, from open-air galleries to festivals, becoming an integral part of Budapest’s cultural scene.

Looking to the Future

As the city prepares for the Újjáéledő Rakpart 2030 project, which may commence renovations on the Jane Haining viaduct and other sections in 2025 or 2026, this year’s opening takes on special significance. It offers a final opportunity to experience the rakpart in its current form, promising a season filled with nostalgia and anticipation for the future.
