Budapest Hosts the 2026 Champions League Final
UEFA has selected the state-of-the-art Puskás Arena in Budapest to host the 2026 Champions League Final, marking the first time this prestigious club football match will be held in Hungary. The 67,000-seat Puskás Arena, inaugurated in 2019, has already proven itself as a world-class venue by hosting the 2020 UEFA Super Cup and the 2023 Europa League Final.
Sándor Csányi, President of the Hungarian Football Federation, expressed pride in earning UEFA’s trust to organize such a high-profile event. “By hosting the most prestigious club football match in Budapest, we are achieving another strategic objective to develop and increase the popularity of football in Hungary,” he stated.
Hungary has a rich football culture that dates back to the early 20th century. The country has produced several world-class players and teams over the years, and football remains one of the most popular sports among Hungarians.
One of the most celebrated periods in Hungarian football history was the “Golden Team” of the 1950s. Led by the legendary Ferenc Puskás, this team was considered one of the best in the world at the time. Puskás, who scored 84 goals in 85 appearances for the national team, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. Other notable players from this era include Sándor Kocsis and Zoltán Czibor.
In more recent times, Hungary has continued to produce talented footballers. Balázs Dzsudzsák, a winger who played for clubs like PSV Eindhoven and Bursaspor, is one of the country’s most successful modern players. Gábor Király, a goalkeeper known for his iconic sweatpants and grey hair, also had a long and successful career, representing Hungary at two World Cups.
For foreign tourists visiting Hungary, attending a football match can be an exciting way to experience the country’s sporting culture. The atmosphere in the stadiums is electric, with fans singing chants and creating a lively atmosphere. Additionally, many cities have football-themed bars and restaurants where fans gather to watch matches and celebrate their teams.
