What Is Europe Day and Why Does It Matter?

Europe Day marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration of 1950, the visionary proposal that laid the foundation for European cooperation and eventually gave rise to the European Union. Every year, cities across Europe celebrate with public events, and Budapest puts on one of the most vibrant ones. This year’s theme focuses on democracy, sustainability, security, and quality of life — giving visitors a meaningful backdrop to what is also simply a fantastic day out.

The EU Half Marathon – Lace Up and Join the City

The day kicks off with a sporty bang. At 9:00 AM, the EU Half Marathon sets off from Liberty Square, covering the full 21.1 km distance — a nod to Hungary’s years of EU membership. Warm-up exercises start at 8:30 AM, and the race concludes with a cool-down stretch and an award ceremony at noon on the main stage. Starting numbers can be collected in advance at the Europe Experience Centre (Szervita tér 8., Budapest V.), as the race fills up fast.

Live Concerts on the Main Stage

From mid-morning to evening, the Perger István Main Stage delivers a packed lineup of live performances:

  • 10:00 – Performance by Ukrainian artists
  • 10:45 – Dance of Danú (Irish step dance meets Hungarian folk)
  • 12:00 – Opening ceremony and half marathon awards
  • 14:00 – Budai Pop Duó
  • 15:00 – EU Quiz (join in for some fun!)
  • 16:15 – Felefánt
  • 18:30 – Hiperkarma

Hiperkarma is one of Hungary’s most beloved indie-alternative bands — if you’ve never seen them live, this is a great opportunity to catch a free open-air concert at one of Budapest’s most iconic squares.

Kids’ Stage – A Full Day of Entertainment for Families

Traveling with children? They’ve got their own dedicated stage with a lineup that runs all afternoon:

  • 10:30 – Buborék Együttes (kids’ concert)
  • 13:15 – Majorka Színház: A Só (musical puppet show)
  • 15:15 – Varró Dániel and Molnár György’s musical literary program for children
  • 17:30 – Veronaki Zenekar

It’s a genuinely child-friendly event where little ones can be entertained for hours while parents enjoy the rest of the festival.

More Than Just a Party

Throughout the day, Hungarian and international organizations, institutions, and embassies set up stands where you can engage interactively with topics like EU competitiveness, environmental sustainability, safety policy, and democratic values. There’s also an EU Quiz on the main stage — a fun, accessible way to learn something new about Europe while traveling through its heart.
