Ukrainian Gastronomy Day - Much More Than Just Fantastic Borscht

Hey there, food lovers and culture enthusiasts! Let me tell you about an exciting event happening in Budapest that you won’t want to miss. The Ukrainian community in Budapest is organizing the 10th annual Ukrainian Gastronomy Day, featuring the star of the show – the inimitable borscht soup!

Now, if you’re not familiar with borscht, let me give you a little background. Borscht is considered a part of the Ukrainian nation’s DNA, with the first mention of Ukrainian borscht dating back to 1584 in Kyiv. In fact, on July 1, 2022, UNESCO added borscht to its list of cultural heritage items, recognizing it as a heritage that requires urgent protection.

The Ukrainian community in Budapest has its own special story with borscht. Back in 2015, in the green surroundings of Kőbánya, the idea of celebrating this national pride was born. The Ukrainian self-government of Kőbánya brought together local Ukrainians, and they prepared the first 100 liters of borscht and 500 varenyky (Ukrainian dumplings). This marked the beginning of a tradition that has beautifully evolved over the years.

Fast forward 10 years, and now we have the opportunity to celebrate this anniversary in the heart of Budapest! The event will take place on September 21, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Városháza Park.

So, what can you expect at this festival? Well, for starters, there will be multiple varieties of borscht and other delicious Ukrainian dishes to savor. You can also participate in a charity fair featuring special Ukrainian souvenirs, clothes, embroidered shirts, and other unique products. Plus, there will be an exclusive exhibition of old traditional embroidered shirts from different regions of Ukraine.

But that’s not all! There will be a Ukrainian-style photo zone, cultural programs, music, dance, games, and entertaining activities for children. It’s going to be a day filled with fun, food, and cultural immersion.

The organizers are providing the borscht, and attendees are encouraged to contribute to support Ukraine. As always, your contributions will help Ukraine in its fight for freedom and independence.

If you’d like to get involved and help out, you’re more than welcome! Whether it’s chopping vegetables, stirring pots, taking photos, or any other volunteer activity, your assistance will be greatly appreciated. And if you have any delicious sweet or savory products to offer, feel free to contact the organizers – they guarantee attention and publicity for your contribution.

To ensure that everyone gets a taste and the organizers can adequately prepare for your arrival, registration is required.

This year’s Ukrainian Gastronomy Day is not just a culinary celebration; it’s a meeting of hearts and a show of unity for a common victory. As they say, “Borscht with the taste of VICTORY – EVERY DONATION IS IMPORTANT FOR UKRAINE!”

So, mark your calendars, register, and come join the Ukrainian community in Budapest for a day of delicious food, cultural enrichment, and support for a worthy cause. See you there!
