New CAF Tram Begins Live Testing in Budapest

New CAF Tram Begins Live Testing in Budapest

Budapest’s public transport is taking a significant leap forward as the first of 51 new CAF trams has begun its live testing phase. This modern, low-floor vehicle marks the beginning of a major upgrade to the city’s tram network, set to increase the proportion of low-floor trams from 30% to approximately 40%.

Rigorous Testing Process

The new CAF tram is undergoing a comprehensive testing regime before it can enter passenger service:

  • Manufacturer’s inspection of control systems, including brakes, air conditioning, and door operation software.
  • A mandatory 1,000-kilometer test run.
  • Final inspection by transport authorities.

Once these tests are successfully completed, the tram will be handed over to BKK (Budapest’s transport authority) and begin serving passengers.

Advanced Features

The 34-meter-long tram, manufactured and assembled in Zaragoza, Spain, boasts several improvements over its predecessors:

  • Higher-performance air conditioning system
  • Updated bodywork with improved side panels and doors
  • Enhanced interior trims

Expanding Low-Floor Tram Coverage

The introduction of these new trams will allow for increased low-floor tram service on existing lines, including routes 1, 14, 42, 50, and 69. Additionally, pending EU funding and necessary infrastructure investments, modern trams may also appear on lines 2, 23, 24, 51A, and 62.

Future Plans

BKK is not stopping at 51 new trams. The transport authority is already working on a tender for potentially more than 100 additional modern trams to arrive in Budapest. This ongoing fleet renewal is part of a broader strategy to modernize public transport in the Hungarian capital, making it more accessible and comfortable for all passengers.

With the last of the current 51-tram order expected to enter service by the end of 2026, Budapest is on track to significantly improve its public transport infrastructure, enhancing the city’s livability and sustainability.
