Introduction to the Exhibition
From November 21, 2025, to February 15, 2026, Budapest’s Hungarian National Gallery hosts a major retrospective of Tihanyi Lajos, one of Hungary’s most innovative painters. Celebrating the 140th anniversary of his birth and the return of his artistic legacy to Hungary, this exhibition offers visitors nearly 200 artworks, including paintings, graphics, photographs, and personal items.
The Artist’s Life and Legacy
Tihanyi Lajos overcame significant personal challenges, including losing his hearing at age eleven, to develop a distinctive artistic voice that merged Hungarian expressionism with avant-garde trends. After emigrating in 1919, he lived and worked across Europe and the United States, forming close connections with prominent intellectuals and artists, before settling in Paris until his death.
