Extreme Cold Warning Issued in Budapest

As winter tightens its grip on Hungary’s capital, Budapest is experiencing a period of severe cold weather that is expected to persist for several days. This extreme weather condition poses significant challenges and risks, especially for the city’s most vulnerable residents and unprepared visitors.
Temperature Plunge
The meteorological forecasts indicate that temperatures in certain areas of Budapest and its surroundings may drop to around -10°C (14°F) or even below during the night and early morning hours. In some locations, the mercury could plummet to as low as -15°C (5°F). These frigid temperatures make prolonged outdoor exposure potentially life-threatening.
Urban Heat Island Effect
Interestingly, Budapest experiences an urban heat island effect, even during winter. This phenomenon results in warmer temperatures in the densely built-up central areas compared to the less developed outskirts. For instance, while the temperature in the 8th district (Józsefváros) was recorded at -2.2°C (28°F), Budakeszi, located about 10-12 km away, registered -10°C (14°F) at the same time. This temperature difference can be as much as 8°C (14.4°F) between the city center and the suburbs.

Safety Measures
Due to the dangerous cold, authorities have activated the “red code” alert from February 17th at 8 PM, which will remain in effect at least until February 21st. This alert mandates all social institutions to provide shelter to homeless or distressed individuals, regardless of their usual capacity or function.
Advice for Tourists
Visitors to Budapest during this period should take extra precautions:
- Dress in warm, layered clothing
- Limit time spent outdoors, especially during the night and early morning
- Stay informed about weather updates and any emergency announcements
- Be aware of the symptoms of hypothermia and frostbite
Remember, while the urban heat island effect may make the city center slightly warmer, temperatures are still dangerously low. Tourists should not be deceived by this relative warmth and should still take all necessary precautions to stay safe in Budapest’s winter conditions.
