Budapest Street Photography Collective Captures the Soul of the City

The Budapest Street Photography Collective (BPSPC) has recently released their first collaborative photo album titled “Budapest Street,” which beautifully captures the essence of life in the Hungarian capital. The collective, consisting of eight talented photographers – Krisztián Bódis, Lili Chripkó, Dénes Erdős, Jácint Juhász, Márton Neményi, Dominika Rácz, Bertalan Soós, and Bálint Szabó – has managed to present Budapest in a way that is both authentic and captivating.

In an era where mobile photography dominates and people primarily focus on taking and sharing selfies, the art of street photography has become increasingly rare. The BPSPC’s work stands out as they skillfully observe and wait for the perfect moment to capture the city and its inhabitants in their most genuine form. The collective’s photographs go beyond mere portraits of strangers on the street; they tell stories of joy, sorrow, tension, and tranquility, encapsulating the lives of nearly two million people in a few carefully composed frames.

As Dávid Zubreczki states in the foreword of the album, “This book is like a trailer for the city, one that makes me want to go out on the streets and take in the life of Budapest. It must be a tough job to condense a two-three hour film into a minute and a half. But where is this task compared to what the creators of this volume have undertaken? To compress more than five hundred square kilometers into a few street details, nearly a million apartments into a couple of buildings, and nearly two million human lives, joys, sorrows, tensions, and calmness into a few captured gestures.”

The BPSPC’s album offers something familiar to everyone, but it is only when one holds the book in their hands that they truly recognize the scenes they have encountered countless times. The photographs are like well-crafted poems, guiding the viewer to situations and sensations that are well-known but have never been presented with such precision by anyone else.

The Budapest Street Photography Collective aims to promote and gain recognition for the art of street photography in Hungary, where the legal environment and public sentiment are not particularly favorable towards the genre. However, their work is not meant to harm, mock, or judge; instead, it seeks to capture the life of the streets in a way that provides an authentic and undistorted view of the city and its people.

If you ever find yourself being photographed by one of the members of the BPSPC, don’t start shouting about your rights. Instead, appreciate the art they create and consider purchasing their album “Budapest Street” to be convinced by the power of their images.
