Museum History and Collections
Founded in 1992, the Urban Public Transport Museum occupies a beautifully restored 1914 tram depot building next to the HÉV terminal in Szentendre. The museum showcases Budapest’s public transportation evolution from the first horse-drawn tramway opening on August 1, 1866, through to modern metro systems.
The collection features approximately 60 restored vehicles, including the historic 1887 steam locomotive “Haraszti” and a 1897 tram that represented Hungarian transportation at the Paris Hungarian Year in 2001. Visitors can climb aboard many of these vintage vehicles for an interactive experience.
