Ancient Sword Found In The Danube

Hey there, have you heard about the incredible 600-year-old sword found in the Danube River in Budapest? It’s quite a story! A man named Erik Kovács, who enjoys magnet fishing, made the stunning discovery.

While casting his magnet into the river, as he often does in search of metal objects, Kovács felt something long and substantial attach to his magnet. As he pulled it out of the water, it became clear that he had hooked a sword! Although he couldn’t immediately determine its age, Kovács noticed that only about 15-20 centimeters of the sword was missing, primarily a portion of the handle.

With the help of a museologist friend, Kovács learned that he had stumbled upon a genuine archaeological find. He then took the medieval blade to the Budapest History Museum. “I would have been happy to keep it on top of my cabinet at home, but of course, such objects cannot be kept privately,” Kovács said. “I won’t even get money for it, but I was very pleased and extremely grateful that they thanked me for reporting what I had found.”

Now, we’ve all heard tales of the Lady of the Lake, who gifted King Arthur with the legendary Excalibur. Could it be that she has a relative residing in the depths of the Danube in Budapest? While that might be a bit of a stretch, it’s still an incredibly cool find!

Once the museum completes the restoration of the sword, it will likely be put on display for all to admire. It’s not every day that a piece of history like this emerges from the murky depths of a river, and it’s all thanks to the keen eye and responsible actions of a dedicated magnet fisherman.
