Why This Event Is Worth Your Time
What makes this festival stand out is its philosophy: that holidays become truly meaningful when the lead-up is filled with shared experiences and hands-on preparation. The Museum of Ethnography has designed this day so that families, couples, and solo visitors alike can engage with the lesser-known but still very much alive Easter traditions of Hungary — not just watch them, but actually take part in them.
Program Highlights
Easter Needlework with the Guzsalyas Workshop (10:30–12:30)
This workshop introduces visitors to needle felting, a popular dry felting technique where wool fibres are shaped around a form using a special needle. Participants can create either one hen or two Easter egg designs using Styrofoam egg moulds wrapped in colourful wool. It’s a tactile, creative activity that produces a beautiful handmade keepsake to take home. Recommended for children aged 8 and over, and pre-registration is required.
Location: Ethnographic Salon, across from the Ethnoshop
Palóc Hairdressing Demonstration (10:30–12:30)
This is one of the most unique events of the day — a living folk art demonstration led by Julianna Mihálynė Sápi Tóth, a master of folk art, alongside three generations of her family. Visitors can watch and participate as traditional Bag hairstyles and headdresses are created in an interactive session. Film director Orsolya Székely, photographer Zsófia Mohos, and costume researcher Gergő Tóth will also be present. Pre-registration is required.
Location: MÉTA Béta
Egg Decorating Workshop for Families (10:30–13:30 and 15:00–17:00)
One of the most beloved Easter crafts gets centre stage here. Visitors of all ages can try their hand at decorating a traditional Hungarian Easter egg — the museum provides the egg, and you bring the creativity. A great activity to do together as a family.

Zither Concerts (11:00–15:00)
Throughout the morning and early afternoon, the Zither Exhibition hosts a series of intimate concerts at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00, and 15:00. The zither is a traditional Hungarian string instrument with a beautifully delicate sound, and these short performances make for a lovely cultural pause between activities.

EthnoEco Plant and Seed Swap (14:00–16:00)
This charming community event invites visitors to bring a plant or packet of seeds to swap with others. Whether you’re a keen gardener or just want to take home something green, the swap is open to all kinds of plants — houseplants, garden flowers, herbs, and more. Alongside the swap, you can also make seed bombs filled with a colourful mix of annual flowers to take home and scatter in your garden or balcony.
Location: Ethnographic Salon, across from the Ethnoshop
EthnoFusion — Interactive DJ Game with Folk Musicians (17:00–18:00)
This is the festival’s most innovative offering. Using the Museum of Ethnography’s musical motif creator app (available at ethnofusion.neprajz.hu), visitors can step up to the podium and actually conduct live Hungarian folk musicians — deciding who plays loudly, which motifs to use, and how the music builds. It’s a genuinely unique experience that blends traditional folk music with interactive technology in a way that’s fun for kids and adults alike.
Location: Level -2, Lobby
Folk on 45 Concert (18:00–19:00)
The day wraps up with a live concert on the Damjanich Street side of the museum, giving the festival a vibrant musical send-off. The shops on this side of the building will remain open until the concert ends at 19:00, so there’s plenty of time to browse after the show.

Easter Gift Shopping at the Ethnoshop
If you’re looking for a unique Easter gift or a meaningful souvenir from Budapest, the museum’s Ethnoshop has put together a special Easter selection of more than 30 items. Highlights include flower diffusers in five variations, a needle felting hen-making kit, a family poetry book, Romani Design floral earrings, ethnographic motif coasters, and collection-inspired pins. It’s a lovely alternative to the usual tourist gift shop fare.
A Festival That Goes Beyond the Typical
The Easter Festival at the Museum of Ethnography is a rare opportunity to engage with Hungarian folk culture in a genuinely hands-on, welcoming environment. From needle felting and egg decorating to live zither music and interactive folk concerts, the day is thoughtfully designed to be educational, creative, and fun — all for the price of a single exhibition ticket. It’s one of those events that locals treasure and tourists rarely discover, which makes it all the more worth seeking out.
