Explore the Cosmos at the “To the Galaxy! Hungary and the Space Age” Exhibition

Discover Hungary’s journey through the Space Age

From March 4 to July 31, 2026, the BTM Castle Museum in Budapest invites you to explore Destination: Galaxy! Hungary and the Space Age | 1957–1983—a fascinating exhibition that brings to life how the Space Age reshaped imagination, science, and technology.

A new vision of Earth from outer space

The Space Age transformed ways of thinking about reality, space, and time all over the world. Seen from outer space, a new vision of our distant planet unfolded before human eyes; boundlessness and heroism acquired new meanings. Worldwide, images and ideas changed, and new horizons opened up for imagination. This transformation was reflected in humanity’s concepts of the future, in both enthusiasm and fear.

The exhibition examines the evolution of science and technology beginning in 1957 with the launch of the first Sputnik—known at the time as “the dawn of the Space Age.” It also highlights how this new relationship between imagination and reality left its mark across various fields of culture.

Hungary’s unique perspective among the stars

Although outer space was often imagined as existing beyond nations, Destination: Galaxy! explores the Space Age from one specific point on Earth: Hungary. At the center of the display stand the spacecraft and the astronaut—from Vostok and Gagarin, through the shift brought by the Moon landing, to the realization of Hungarian space ambitions celebrated with Bertalan Farkas’s groundbreaking journey and return to Earth.

Visitors can see objects that have traveled into space, images connected to the cult of astronauts, and rare video interviews featuring the main figures and supporting personalities of the era. The exhibition also showcases documents from scientific research and traces of the Space Age as they appeared in public and private life.
