Tavaszi Széll 2026: Budapest’s Favourite May Day Street Festival Is Back

Budapest’s Spring Festival at Széll Kálmán Square

If you happen to be in Budapest on May 1st, you’re in luck. One of the city’s most beloved neighbourhood celebrations returns to Széll Kálmán Square for its fifth edition — and it’s shaping up to be the best one yet. The Tavaszi Széll (Spring Breeze) festival is a full day of live music, street food, design markets, and good vibes, running from noon until late evening.

What Is Tavaszi Széll?

Tavaszi Széll started as a local initiative by a handful of bars and bistros around Széll Kálmán Square and has quietly grown into one of Budapest’s most charming annual traditions. Now in its fifth year, the event is organised by six neighbourhood venues — Nemdebár, 101 Bistro, Sárkány, Pingrumba, Heavy and Zappi — who join forces every May 1st to turn the square into a colourful, music-filled open-air celebration. Think of it as a modern take on the Hungarian majális, the traditional May Day outdoor gathering, with a very cool local twist.

Live Music All Day Long

Music runs continuously from midday, with a packed lineup that covers everything from folk and gypsy jazz to electronic beats.

  • 13:00 – 14:00: Tücsök Eszti & Végh Marci
  • 16:00 – 17:00: Mesterházy
  • 17:00 – 18:00: DJ Szotyi
  • 18:00 – 19:00: Toxic Friends (Levkō b2b Raasa)
  • 19:00 – 20:00: Manus Duó — Fövényi & Troll, gypsy jazz
  • 20:00 – 21:00: Hari-Bo
  • 21:00 – 22:00: TBA

Whether you’re into chilled afternoon acoustic sets or want to dance into the evening, the lineup has something for every taste.

Mini Design Market

Local designers and makers take over part of the square with a curated pop-up market. This year’s vendors include Ruha, NOS, Tar Luca Keramika, Orobori Ceramics, Imahi Jewelry, and Németh Franciska — a great opportunity to pick up something genuinely handmade and unique as a souvenir.

Things to Do Beyond the Music

The festival is designed for everyone, not just music fans. Here’s what else is going on throughout the day:

  • Face painting for kids from 13:00 to 16:00
  • Amnesty International family storytelling workshop (14:00–15:30), recommended for children aged 5–12 — registration required in advance
  • Traditional lion dances at 16:00 and 17:00, a crowd favourite that only lasts a few minutes but is well worth catching
  • Bolygó interactive community installation — a collaborative art piece that visitors shape together throughout the day
  • Anniversary tombola raffle at 18:00, with proceeds going to a good cause — tickets are 1,000 HUF each, cash only

Join the Photo Contest

Feeling creative? The festival is running an Instagram photo contest throughout the day. Capture the atmosphere, the food, the music, or a moment that catches your eye, post it with the hashtag #tavasziszell2026, and you could win a prize. It’s a fun way to engage with the event and take home more than just memories.

Street Food and Drinks

No Hungarian festival is complete without good food and drinks, and Tavaszi Széll delivers. The participating venues set up food stalls and bars around the square, so you can graze your way through the afternoon with a drink in hand while you explore.
